SHITIZENS is a map of community-managed street observations. It is not a City service, an emergency channel, an accusation tool, or permission to confront anyone.
Using SHITIZENS
By using the website or app, you agree to these terms and the Privacy Notice. Use the service only where it is lawful and safe. The service is not directed to children, and you must meet the age requirements of the app store and the laws that apply to you.
Product language
SHITIZENS documents street waste. It never identifies or accuses a person.
Not Toronto 311 or emergency help
A SHITIZENS post is not a City of Toronto service request and does not create a cleanup obligation. Only a reference issued by the City proves that it accepted a request. For an emergency or immediate danger, contact emergency services. Do not use the app while driving, in traffic, trespassing, or in a way that could put anyone at risk.
What you may submit
Submit only an honest, current observation you are allowed to share. Do not submit:
- faces, readable licence plates, private homes or interiors, tents, IDs, or medical information;
- a clearly identifiable child or vulnerable person, harassment, threats, or an accusation about who caused a condition;
- sexual content, gore, staged or manipulated evidence, or material that is illegal or unsafe to handle; or
- content collected through trespass, confrontation, or conduct that puts you or someone else in danger.
Your content and consent
You confirm that you have the right to submit the content. You give SHITIZENS a limited, non-exclusive licence to store, process, automatically generalize the location, and display public post information to operate the service. Private source evidence is protected by default. By choosing Post to map, you authorize SHITIZENS' self-hosted model service to create a non-graphic cartoon from the private source copy. You also authorize a Show photo button that loads the screened, bounded metadata-free source-photo view only after a viewer deliberately asks to reveal it. Both may be shown only while the post is publicly eligible. The retained high-resolution original stays private.
In the You tab, you can turn Photo reveal off or choose Remove photo. Removing your photo makes it and its cartoon unavailable, as described in the Privacy Notice. Other people’s photos and updates stay on the shared post. Your photo’s status stays in the You tab.
Community reactions, removal, and public sharing
New submissions appear publicly only after automated eligibility, safety, and public-preview processing. Eligible established anonymous installations can choose one of six reversible reactions.Looks real supports a post’s credibility and Looks fake challenges it;Gross, Nope, Peak Toronto, andI cannot are social reactions only. Active reactions expire after seven days, and sending the same choice again does not extend that window. When a post reaches the qualified threshold—three active Looks fake reactions and at least two more Looks fake than Looks real—it is automatically hidden from public discovery; it can return automatically if the balance changes or checks lapse. Use reactions to give feedback on a post. Do not use them to target a person. The service can immediately suppress a post after two distinct qualified privacy or unsafe-media reports, and retain a narrow emergency removal path for legal or serious safety cases. For serious abuse, safety, legal, or privacy risk, the tightly restricted emergency safety API may suspend the anonymous source installation after a specific confirmation. Suspension revokes that installation's session and makes every post it submitted, and every public visual or source-photo reveal tied to those posts, unavailable. It is loopback-only operational tooling, not a website, a routine review process, or a response to ordinary disagreement.
When you are within 1.5 km of a post's already-public coarse anchor, the app may let you send a fresh precise-location Still there orGone presence signal. It never reads, uses, or exposes the submitted exact capture coordinate. Only a server-verified genuine app installation can affect public state. In the rolling 48-hour window, only each eligible installation's latest signal counts: Still there marks a post Recently reported, one Gone makes a non-Gone post Unconfirmed, and three distinct recent Gone signals with a two-signal Gone margin make it Gone. This is an automatic community status rule; app integrity and location checks do not guarantee that the original post was true.
Public map anchors are deliberately coarse. Share cards are non-graphic and may link to a post or area, but they do not guarantee the waste is still there. You may share the service responsibly; you may not scrape it, create a harassment list, or use it to target people or addresses. Source evidence remains protected for the person who posted it and tightly restricted emergency-safety operations; public sharing never grants access to it.
Public previews and photo reveal
A SHITIZENS-operated, self-hosted model service may create a cartoon from a private source copy (with embedded metadata removed) after the person who posted it choosesPost to map. That affirmative posting action authorizes both the public preview and a viewer-controlled Show photo action. Only the screened, bounded, metadata-free processing copy is lazy loaded after a tap, never the retained high-resolution original. It carries no EXIF or the exact capture location and is never returned in a public DTO or URL. An asynchronous automatic screen checks relevance, safety, and basic plausibility before either public visual is eligible. It is not documentary proof and does not establish that a report is true, current, caused by any person, or that anyone is lying. We do not send private source evidence or precise coordinates to a third-party AI provider and do not use submissions, public previews, or location data to train a model. A public visual becomes unavailable when the underlying post is hidden, withdrawn, or emergency-removed.
Private account access and availability
Every app installation starts with a private anonymous account backed by a persistent pseudonymous installation credential. Map, capture, checks, and sharing do not require an email, password, or saved account. Immediately before a first Post to map, you choose a unique private lowercase name. It appears only in authenticatedYou and password sign-in, never in a map, post, share, public DTO, public URL, public handle, or public profile. You may add a password to Save account and sign in by name and password on another phone. You may add an email for one-time account recovery. Its code restores the account; it does not reset or change the password. A forgotten password cannot be used to sign in; without a recovery email, the account is unrecoverable. SHITIZENS persists only an HMAC of the normalized recovery email, never a plain-text address or public identity. Keep the device secure. Saving your account does not alter per-installation attestation, trust, location requirements, reaction eligibility, or rate limits. Settings includes Delete account & data, which permanently erases an anonymous account or, for a saved account, every linked installation, private name, password credential, and HMAC recovery-email hash after the service confirms deletion. We may change, pause, or end the service, and we do not guarantee that any post will remain live, remain publicly discoverable, or lead to cleanup. We may also suspend an anonymous installation only through the narrow emergency path described above; ordinary community reactions never suspend an installation.
Limits and legal terms
To the extent permitted by law, the service is provided as available and without a guarantee of accuracy, availability, or fitness for a particular purpose. Nothing in these terms excludes rights that cannot legally be excluded. These terms are intended to be governed by the laws of Ontario and the applicable laws of Canada.
Support and reporting
For a public post, use Report post in the app for privacy or unsafe public media. Use Looks fake for a routine wrong-place, duplicate, or misleading pin. For your own photo, use Photo reveal or Remove photo in the You tab. Other people’s photos and updates stay on shared posts. The public Supportpage lets you send SHITIZENS a private message without an account or email address.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms as the service changes. Material changes will be posted on this page. Continuing to use the service after the effective date means you accept the updated terms, where permitted by law.
