Map pins show the area.
Posting sends the precise location captured with your photo to SHITIZENS. Public pins show an approximate area, and posts in the same area are grouped. A photo can still make a place recognizable.
THE CLEAR VERSION
SHITIZENS maps street waste shared by people in Toronto. It does not identify who caused it, track people, promise a cleanup, or pretend a post is an official Toronto 311 request.
Posting sends the precise location captured with your photo to SHITIZENS. Public pins show an approximate area, and posts in the same area are grouped. A photo can still make a place recognizable.
Posts show a cartoon first. After the photo passes our checks, viewers can tap Show photo to see a copy of the original photo with embedded metadata, including exact location, removed. You can turn this option off with Photo reveal in the You tab.
Browsing needs no permission. Finding your area, posting, and nearby checks use location while the app is open. There is no background location, route history, passive presence, or people map.
HOW LOCATION WORKS
POST SAFELY
Photograph the street waste. Keep people out of the frame and avoid identifying or blaming anyone.
Do not upload faces, readable plates, homes, private interiors, tents, medical details, IDs, nudity, gore, needles, or anyone vulnerable.
Do not confront anyone, enter traffic, trespass, touch the material, or stage a post for content.
New posts appear publicly only from a server-verified genuine app installation and after automated eligibility, safety, and public-preview processing. Those checks assess relevance, safety, and basic plausibility; they are safeguards, not proof that a photo is true, current, caused by anyone, or that anyone is lying.
Anyone can use the four expressive reactions on a shared web post without signing up. In the app, eligible verified installations can also choose Looks real or Looks fake, which affect the automatic map rule. Three Looks fake reactions with a two-reaction margin over Looks real hide the pin, and it can return if the balance changes.
A nearby Still there or Gone answer affects public status only from an eligible verified installation. The latest eligible answer from each installation counts for 48 hours: Still there marks a post Recently reported, one Gone marks a non-Gone post Unconfirmed, and three distinct recent Gone answers with a two-signal Gone margin make it Gone. App integrity limits scripts; it does not prove the observation.
Use Report post for privacy or unsafe-media concerns. Two distinct qualified urgent reports hide the pin immediately while the narrow emergency path handles it. Use Hide contributor to hide someone’s posts on your device.
YOUR PHOTO, YOUR CONTROL
Open your post in the You tab to change Photo reveal or choose Remove photo. Removing your photo makes it and its cartoon unavailable immediately. Other people’s photos and updates stay on the post. Stored copies are deleted according to the schedule in the Privacy Notice.
SHITIZENS IS NOT 311
Only a reference issued by the City of Toronto proves the City accepted a service request. For emergencies or immediate danger, use emergency services instead of this app.
CORRECTION · PRIVACY · TAKEDOWN
Report public privacy or unsafe media from the post in SHITIZENS. Use Looks fake for a routine wrong-place, duplicate, or misleading pin, and use Remove photo in the You tab to remove your own photo. If you cannot access a post or need a private legal, privacy, or takedown route, use the Support form to send a private message without an email address, session, or existing post. It is not an emergency service.
